With additive manufacturing you can be innovative without taking risks
The growth of additive manufacturing (AM, 3D printing) has been exponential in the last few years. Almost all industries have been using AM for many years to manufacture prototypes of both plastic and metal. The challenge today is to use the technology for real production parts. With AM one can produce complex shapes which are not possible to manufacture in the traditional way. Also, no production tools are required to go into production or, if tooling is required, that can also be made through AM, and material wastage is minimal. The challenge, now, is to exploit the opportunities additive manufacturing offers in a smart way.
To take advantage of the many advantages AM offers, engineers and designers need to learn how to design for the technologies, and to understand pros and cons, as well as the possibilities, of each technology to understand if and when they should be used.
The aim of this specialized course is to provide a better understanding of additive manufacturing and how best to design for it. It is also to give an insight to where this technology will take us in the future.
