A two day course that integrates complexity science and systems engineering with business architecture concepts. The course teaches decision making in complex sociotechnical environments and covers business and operating model design and guides successful collaboration with solution architects and agile development teams.
The modern world is becoming ever more complex and interconnected. Modern business initiatives are impacted both by this growing complexity and the need to be able to respond with technical implementations on which they are dependent. This puts great demands on anyone tasked with realizing these initiatives. It is important to develop strategies and techniques for navigating this complexity and understanding the balance between complexity, reality, and engineering. Managing this balance is key to success.
Based on the successful course for solution architects “Antifragile Architecture” this course gives business architects, project managers, enterprise architects, CTO’s, and business leaders the tools to understand and successfully manage business complexity in engineering projects.

Complex projects and programs have many challenges
- Continuously changing business environment
- Uncertainty around approaches
- Constant changes in requirements
- Poor quality in technical delivery
- Technology hype
Together these create an impression of chaos and constant churn. The can result in a resistance to change, technical failure, and frozen transformation efforts.
This course teaches how manage efforts by linking these aspects of change and uncertainty through the concepts in complexity science, helping students to understand and communicate the stresses caused by complexity and manage the impact across business, operational, and engineering concerns when change happens. Formulating a coherent strategy based on the ideas in Nassim Taleb’s “Antifragile” to produce a business architecture that is resilient and producing a language to describe complexity that can be shared across business, solution architecture, and agile development teams.
Barry O’Reilly is the founder of Black Tulip Technology and creator of ”Antifragile System Design”. He has held Chief Architect roles at Microsoft and IDesign, been Microsoft’s IOT TAP Lead for Western Europe, and Worldwide Lead for Microsoft’s Solution Architecture Community. He has also been a startup CTO, and was a founder of Sweden’s Azure User Group.
