This course describes protocols used in the core network part of modern 2G/3G mobile networks. The brief description of various transport network protocols (SS7, ATM, and IP) is followed by detailed technical description of application layer protocols. Some aspects of user plane transport are covered as well (packet data tunnelling, circuit-switched traffic in ATM- or IP-based networks). A number of signalling scenarios are described and analysed step by step. Topics included: MAP, GTP, CAMEL, H.248, BICC and SIP-I.
