GSM/UMTS/EPS System Overview

GSM/UMTS/EPS System Overview

The GSM/UMTS/EPS System Overview course describes the evolution from the voice centric GSM via the IP bearer of GPRS and early UMTS to the all-IP architecture in IMS and later developments such as High Speed Packet Access and LTE.  All topics are presented in a comprehensive – yet easily understandable – way. Essential subsystems, nodes and protocols are described. Basic traffic cases are used to demonstrate the function and architecture of the different systems.

Day 1 and 2:

  • Nodes and architecture of GSM

The GSM Radio Interface

  • Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA)
  • Time slots, physical and logical channels
  • Radio related problems and solutions in GSM

Cell Planning

  • Cell types (macro, micro, pico)
  • Coverage vs capacity
  • General steps in the cell planning process

Mobile Station and BSS (GERAN)

  • Mobile Equipment (ME) and Subscriber Identity Module (SIM)
  • Base Station System: BTS, BSC

The Core Network

  • Core Network nodes: MSC, GMSC, VLR and HLR
  • SS7 signalling in the GSM Core
  • The Split Architecture
